Minimalism is a movement that created change, for better or worse, away from the conventional, convoluted, styles of the preceding art movements. This change not only illustrates an important landmark in the vast landscape of ideas in the art world, but also makes a statement about the human tendency to rebel against standard conventions. The era of the 1960s was a time when war and politics plagued the minds of many people, including artists. As a medium of artistic expression, Minimalism reflects the social desires of simplification of the 1960s. Minimalists were successful in the sense that they communicated their message of simplification, leaving a mark on the canvas of art history and simplifying the communication of ideas through art. Some critics may call it boring, other may call it revolutionary, but either way Minimalism is an important link to the understanding of modern art.
