"In art, all who have done something other than their predecessors have merited the epithet of revolutionary; and it is they alone who are masters." These words by Paul Gauguin epitomize the essence of Minimalism. Minimalism strove to be anything but remotely similar to the previous art movements of the 20th and 19th centuries. It was truly revolutionary in communicating a need for change in the art world, reflecting the rebelliousness of the late 1950s. Posthumously, Minimalism has had a great impact on visual art, and has gone on to influence music, dance, and architecture as well. Minimalism is therefore a key to understanding contemporary art.
